One
'Come on, Andy,' Rosalie pleaded again. 'Tell me what he's really like.'
They had just arrived in Resolute in the high Canadian Arctic and were to
spend the next month working with Professor Lucien Tesseron on a research project in one of the loneliest places on earth. She felt entitled to know what to expect.
She had only changed her course at university six months earlier, despite her
family's opposition, and this was her first field trip. Already teetering between high excitement and a stomach-churning nervousness, Andy's evasiveness wasn't helping. 'Surely the world-renowned Professor Tesseron hasn't got some dark and shaming secret that you're trying to protect?'
She kicked at the snow-covered ground and huddled further into her hooded
parka as the icy March wind cut across the airfield, making her shiver. The pilot of their plane had said it was quite warm today - only twenty-five degrees below zero. Andy still hadn't answered and now she gave him an encouraging nudge.
He sighed. 'I don't know what else to tell you. Anyway, you'll meet him
yourself in a few minutes, so why not wait?'
Exasperated, she pulled a face. 'I only want to know a little about his
personality. I'm not asking for a blow-by-blow account of all his bad habits.' She paused, then added with a disarming grin, 'Though it might be a help to know some of them.' |

Against family opposition, Rosalie Meredith joins a research
expedition to the lonely Canadian Arctic, but her thrill at finding
she is to work with the renowned marine biologist, Professor
Lucien Tesseron, is reduced when, to her bewilderment, he
makes clear that he considers her an unwanted passener.
